This is week in our Newsletter - Unseen and Unbelievable wonders of Nature!
This edition of "Connecting the Dots" takes you on a fascinating journey into nature's hidden corners. Everything from a newly discovered butterfly to the profound effects of human actions on wildlife
Hello, and welcome to our newsletter.
Connecting the dots is our way of making sense of the world. We do this by focussing on the often-forgotten aspects of the natural world- blades of grass, fungi, a lone warbling frog.
This week, too, we stay with our theme of wonder. But is wonder always a good thing? You tell us.
1. We are grateful to the researchers at the National Centre for Biological Sciences and Indian Foundation for Butterflies for their shimmering discovery- the Conjoined Silverline (Cigaritis conjuncta), a butterfly species with distinct silver lines. Read more about it here.
2. We hear a lot about invasive species of plants and animals. You might have seen this word used in the context of the ‘notorious lantana’ and the Burmese python. If you’re looking for a different perspective, please check out this post by wonder.yonder and current conservation. It asks a contemplative question- where do wildlife species truly ‘belong’?
3. Human actions, in this case, unregulated fishing, caused the java stingaree to become extinct. Scientists believe that the fish became extinct in 1862 and were able to confirm this in December 2023, the first marine fish to be declared extinct. Is it really a wonder that our thoughtlessness has caused an irrevocable loss?
4. On a positive note, we’d love for you to watch Adventure Beast. This adult animated series features an intrepid zoologist, his spirited niece and mostly nervous assistant. They travel the world on their mission to save wild beasts. This educational-comedy series is a great way to understand the natural world. Find it on Netflix.
5. There are so many things to love about the work of Raku Inoe. The use of nature in remarkable ways to create unforgettable illustrations, the vibrant colours (check out Coral Reef 2023), the ingenuity and depth of thought ( Open Mind)... we could go on.
As our senior designer Anish - who introduced us to the artist- puts it, Inoe's "portfolio of work is simply beautiful."
Marvel at his work here:
